ZEN Worksite Safety Policy

6/8/23

Safety Policy Statement:

Zen Space Makers is an exemplary company that cares about its team. We want to eliminate accidents, and create a culture of teamwork. This policy will be written together with the feedback of our entire team, everyone from laborers, to management, to subcontractors.

“Zen” itself refers to a quality of carefulness, mindfulness, and attention. Zen is the practice of a worldview that is grounded in meditation. A part of Zen practice is “Samu” or “work-meditation” in which you work, without distractions, and with a positive and energetic, expanded awareness of your environment.

Policies on Identified Hazards:

It can be distracting to use cell phones in a work site. Our new company policy is to ban the use of cell phones during work hours, unless it is a health or family emergency.

We keep our worksites clean, and sweep up at the end of each day. We do not allow nails to protrude through debris, and we bang them down on old boards before being discarded.

When working on roofs, we use harnesses and rope to engage in OSHA-approved fall prevention.

When working on a ceiling or on an exposed floor over other floors, we encourage workers below to always wear hardhats, and head protection. Do not leave tools on top of ladders. When moving ladders, check to see if anything is on top of it.

We insist on the use of masks, especially when cutting concrete. We strongly encourage hearing protection, especially headphones with bluetooth built-in.

We use the OSHA approved Employee Log Book for safety violation reporting. We post the FDNY No Smoking sign at each work site.

Site Specific Policies to Come

At the start of a major job, we have a team meeting and discuss the schedule, the scope of work, the site details, and then focus on:

  • Details regarding the job site’s location and condition

  • Description of the project scope from a safety perspective

  • List of identified hazards at this site.

  • Hazard control policies, at this site.

Site Rules

  • PPE: PPE must be worn at all times.

Zen Space Makers is responsible for providing personal protective equipment, including: hard hats, eye protection, ear protection, face-shields, and bright vests, where required.

Workers may also provide their own equipment.

Smoking: There is no smoking on the work site. All sites must have a working fire extinguisher on site, in a clearly accessible area, with a bright red and white sign.

Reporting Instructions and Procedures

We heartily encourage workers to report any “Close Calls” or “Near Misses” - that is, the incidents that happen, which could have been a tragedy, but were narrowly avoided.

We encourage you to use this form below to file a “Close Call” report - tell us what happened, and what you think should be done to fix this problem. With Management, we will work with the team to develop new policies over all to avoid this issue, in the future.

REWARD

Any “Close Calls” that are properly reported and evaluated to be important discoveries will be rewarded with a “Free Lunch” for two days, paid for by Zen Space Makers, Inc.
